KLM Royal Dutch Airlines airlines - general info
KLM (in full: Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij, literally Royal Aviation Company; usual English: Royal Dutch Airlines) is a subsidiary of Air France-KLM. Before its merger with Air France, KLM was the national airline of the Netherlands. Air France-KLM is France and the Netherlands' main air carrier. Its KLM subsidiary operates from the airline hub of Schiphol Airport, near Amsterdam, where the subsidiary company has its headquarters. Measured by operating revenues, Air France-KLM is the largest airline group in the world.
Air France-KLM is part of the SkyTeam Alliance with Delta Air Lines, Aeroméxico, Korean Air, CSA Czech Airlines, Alitalia, Northwest Airlines, Aeroflot, and Continental Airlines. Both Air France and KLM continue to fly under their distinct brand names.
The KLM fleet consists mainly of Boeing aircraft, namely 4 Airbus A330-200 , 14 Boeing 737-300, 13 Boeing 737-400, 15 Boeing 737-800, 05 Boeing 737-900 (+ potentially an additional 15 on order), 22 Boeing 747-400, 3 Boeing 747-400ERF, 5 Boeing 767-300ER (being phased out, replaced by Airbus A330's), 13 Boeing 777-200ER, 4 Boeing 777-300ER , 10 McDonnell Douglas MD-11. The average age of the KLM fleet is 9.9 years in April 2006.
KLM offers flights to Europe, Asia - with a very good coverage, as some of the flights are operated by KLM Asia, Africa, North and South Amerrica. SkyTeam carriers KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Delta Air Lines make codesharing to destinations from their Amsterdam, Atlanta and New York JFK hubs, following approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The two carriers will provide customers with service to destinations in the United States and Europe through these hubs. Initially, KLM plans to codeshare on Delta flights to 14 U.S. destinations from Atlanta (Birmingham, Nashville, Charlotte, Charleston, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Greenville, Kahului (Hawaii), Kansas City, Miami, Orlando, Raleigh, San Antonio and Tampa), as well as between New York’s JFK and Atlanta. KLM intends to grow the number of codeshare services across Delta’s network.
