Aeroflot — Russian Airlines (Russian:Аэрофлот — Российские авиалинии), or Aeroflot (Аэрофлот; literally "air fleet"), is the Russian national airline and the biggest carrier in Russia. It is a member of the Sky Team Alliance. It was also the national airline of the Soviet Union and was once the largest airline in the world.
Aeroflot has been working towards redefining itself as a safe and reliable airline. Since 1970 Russian Federation has been a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and starting from 1989 its national carrier – Aeroflot has become a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Aeroflot has also upgraded its fleet of western-built aircraft. It has a total of 18 Airbus A320/A319 jet planes for short-haul flights in Europe and nine Boeing 767 planes for long-haul routes. The total number of planes is 93. It carried 5.9 million passengers in 2003. Aeroflot's Western-made fleet is young, whereas most of the Russian jets (except for Il-96s) are due to retire between 2005 and 2008. Aeroflot average Airbus, Boeing and Douglas fleet age is 7.2 years old in june 2006.
In June of 2000 by the decision of shareholders during the general annual meeting airline acquired a title JSC “Aeroflot-Russian Airlines”, which better corresponds to the status and profile of the national air carrier of the Russian Federation. Airline employs more than 15,000 people, including 2,000 flight specialists; more than 500 of them are aircraft commanders.
In the summer time Aeroflot will carry out regular flights to 87 cities of 47 world countries, including 36 destinations in Europe, 5 destinations in the USA, Canada and Cuba, 2 destinations in Africa, 4 destinations in the Middle East, 10 destinations in Asia, 8 destinations in the CIS-countries and 24 destinations in Russia. Flights to 31 foreign destinations will be carried out as joint operation flights in accordance with code sharing agreements with 24 foreign airlines – “Aeroflot” partners.
